Four levers land in one category plan

Meaning / 01

What it means for retail and category teams

For a retail or category team, the unit of decision is the whole category. A category manager weighs a price move, a new listing or a promotion by what it does to the whole shelf: which lines lose sales to it, how it shifts the margin mix, and which supplier terms it affects.

Stakes / 02

Why it matters

When every line is judged on its own numbers, the category ends up in a shape nobody planned. A promotion that lifts one brand can cost more margin across its neighbours than it earns, and a delisting that looks tidy on a sales report can strand the shoppers who came for it. Managing the category as a whole makes those trade-offs visible before they are made.

Illustrative example

The business and figures are illustrative. None of it is customer data.

Laundry care gross profit over two weeks
ItemNormal fortnightHalf-price promotionResult
Leading liquid, 2 L (promoted)$2,400$3,200+$800
Own-label liquid, 2 L$2,500$1,000−$1,500
Powders$1,200$800−$400
Category total$6,100$5,000−$1,100

The promoted line earns $800 more. The category earns $1,100 less.

Read the example as text

A laundry care category manager is offered supplier funding to sell a leading 2 L liquid at half price for two weeks. In a normal fortnight it sells 400 units at $6 gross profit each; on promotion the forecast is 1,600 units at $2 each after funding, so the line earns $3,200 instead of $2,400. Over the same fortnight the own-label liquid is expected to fall from 500 to 200 units at $5 each, and powders from 300 to 200 at $4. Category units rise from 1,200 to 2,000, and category gross profit falls from $6,100 to $5,000.
